The Benefits of Traditional Wet Shaving

Email Print PDF

In April 2010, Money Magazine published a short article on the frugality of traditional wet shaving. This feature, while helpful in bringing the national spotlight to the benefits of wet shaving, failed to mention many facts. It's important to look at the monetary costs as well as other costs that cannot be quantified. Despite the celebrity endorsements and high-dollar marketing campaigns, men are turning away from disposable razors and returning to old-school products. This article explains the costs and benefits, and explores mass-market shaving vs. traditional wet shaving from a financial and personal perspective.

The Myths of Method Shaving

Charles Roberts, the creator of Method Shaving and the Hydrolast brand, spent countless hours writing lengthy and in-depth documentation, which many critics argue makes the process too complicated, too time consuming, and too expensive. Most of these critics, however, have never tried the system and have encouraged a lot of skepticism and inaccurate assumptions. Set aside the lingo, documentation, and eccentric personalities, and you'll see that the basics of Method Shaving are straight forward and highly effective. This article addresses these assumptions and disproves common myths about Method Shaving.

The shaving brush is the single biggest factor in achieving an outstanding shave. You can use a safety razor, straight razor, or cartridge razor; lather on soap or shaving cream. However, the one aspect of wet shaving that cannot be overlooked is the use of a shaving brush. This article explains the benefits of shaving brushes and offers some tips on choosing the right brush for your shaving style and your budget.

Sometimes it is difficult to get a good, usable lather from a shaving soap or shaving cream, depending on the hardness of the water, floppiness of the brush, and properties of the product. Shaving 101 has published two articles that break down the building process step by step for two beloved, but challenging, products. Both Tabula Rasa and Mitchell's Wool Fat Shaving Soap are fantastic products that everyone should try at least once -- if not regularly. This article reiterates the "Load/Hydrate Technique" and offers instructions on building the perfect cushioning lather.

Shaving with a Straight Razor

For the adventurous shaver, using a straight razor can be a fun challenge. Using a straight razor appeals to a variety of men, from those who collect knives and cutlery to the environmentally or economically conscious who don't want to purchase replacement blades. The larger cutting edge of the razor gives you complete control over the blade angle and the old-school, traditional style of shaving is enjoyed by many. We recently discovered an article written by our friends at-The Shaving Shack about the basics of straight razor shaving. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel, so with their permission, we're sharing their tips on how to shave with a straight razor.

Q & A

Can the regular use of a pre-shave oil coat your shaving brush with a layer of oil that would potential damage it (e.g., clumping of badger hairs) or reduce its effectiveness?
