Because of my love for traditional wet shaving, most of the products I use fall into that category. Occasionally, however, a new product comes along that does not fit exactly into that definition. When the Tsai brothers contacted me and asked if I would be willing to take a look at their TwinLuxe shaving system, I was hesitant at first. They offer a modern, high-priced cream that requires no water to create lather. Their innovation to create a unique product and their philosophy of shaving as a daily luxury convinced me to give this product a try. This article focuses on the central product of the TwinLuxe shaving line, the Smooth Shave Cream.
TwinLuxe is a newcomer to the shaving world. Founded in 2010 by twin brothers Hubert and Anthony Tsai, the brand claims to use the best ingredients to help men achieve the best results with their shaving and skin care. The TwinLuxe brand spares no expense to create the most luxurious products available. In addition to their shaving and skin care products, they also feature razor and brush sets designed from the same high-end materials used to construct Rolls Royce luxury vehicles. The attention to detail with the products and brand presentation also comes with an appropriate price tag, which makes TwinLuxe one of the most exclusive brands available today.
Upon first inspection of the TwinLuxe Smooth Shave Cream, it is obvious that packaging details are definitely not overlooked with this brand. The cream comes packaged in a very high quality translucent tub that is very sturdy and has a screw-on lid that seals the product air tight and prevents it from drying out. The plastic used on the Smooth Shave Cream tub is noticeably higher quality than most other shaving cream tubs and is certainly an added benefit to keeping the cream preserved between shaves. The plastic is thicker and looks more like glass than plastic. While the tub is bulky and not really conducive to travel, it has a classy appearance that a shaving enthusiast who likes to display his high-end products will find very attractive.
The shaving cream itself is formulated with the appropriate water content already mixed in the tub and designed to be applied directly to the face without adding any water. It a pure white cream with a soft and very slick texture that closely resembles many traditional shaving creams; however, once applied to the skin it spreads very easily and establishes a smooth and lubricating surface for the razor to glide across. The fragrance of the cream is a very pleasant and masculine scent that is unlike the routine sandalwood, rose, and others usually found in traditional shaving creams. The aroma of the cream is a fresh scent with undertones of eucalyptus and other botanicals. It is noticeable, but not overbearing or likely to cause an issue for those with sensitive skin that have a hard time tolerating heavily scented products.
Although the cream is not combined with water in a traditional way of lathering, TwinLuxe recommends applying it using a dry shaving brush. This provides the shaver the benefits of using a shaving brush, since the tips of the badger hair will exfoliate the skin and lift the hair prior to shaving. While the cream spread smoothly with the shaving brush, I found the feeling of a dry brush to be awkward since I am accustomed to the warm and softened feel of badger bristles soaked and lathered in a traditional style. When I applied the cream with my fingertips, the TwinLuxe cream spread very easily and did not take a very large amount to cover my entire face with the amount needed to shave. I enjoy using my fingertips because it applies quickly with excellent results and coverage.
The actual shave with the TwinLuxe Smooth Shave Cream is where the product really stood up to the test. I tried the product on many days using a different double edge or straight razor each time. During each shave, I was amazed at how well the cream lubricated and protected my face. The blade glided easily over the skin for a close shave. Because the cream already has the water quality built in, it never evaporated or dried down during the shave. The cream provided consistently smooth and comfortable shaves with no irritation at all.
Because of the consistency of the lather, the TwinLuxe cream does not rinse off the razor between passes as easily as other shaving creams do. I found that you must use very hot water and allow the razor to rinse under running water for a few extra seconds for it to wash off cleanly. Rinsing the razor in a sink or bowl full of standing water is not really possible. Despite this minor inconvenience, the cream rinses easily off the face after shaving and leaves behind very well nourished and moisturized skin. You could very easily skip using an aftershave after shaving with this cream; however, the TwinLuxe Soothing Face Balm combines nicely with it for an excellent finish.
The TwinLuxe Smooth Shave Cream is a product that will probably be met with skepticism from traditional wet shavers. Most men who adopt wet shaving really enjoy using their favorite shaving brushes and creams to whip up a bowl or mug of rich and fragrant lather, which for many is one of the highlights of the overall experience. Although TwinLuxe is different in that respect, the product is very well made and the performance speaks for itself. During the mornings that I am in a hurry to get out the door and do not have time to enjoy a full traditional shave, this cream is the absolute best for getting a quick shave with superior results. Priced at $34 USD for a 150 gram / 5.2 ounce tub, TwinLuxe Smooth Shave Cream is not an economical product on the market, but a tub will easily last a over a month of daily use. The TwinLuxe product line is flashy with a high-end price tag, but the old saying, “you get what you pay for” once again proves to be very true.
