How do you break in a shaving brush?

Scott
Parker, CO

A new shaving brush is usually a little stiff and the bristles are compact from being bound together and packaged. The best way to break in a shaving brush is to actually use it. The more you use it, the quicker it will break in. The bristles will soften and the loft will "bloom" into a natural full shape. It will load shaving soap and cream better and hold the lather for more passes. During this period, avoid hot water, use only warm water when prepping your brush for the shave, and allow the brush to thoroughly dry between shaves, as explained in Mike's article, Drying Makes the Difference. A new brush should be broken in after +/- 15 shaves.
